The SPT (Standard Penetration Test) sampler is a commonly used tool in geotechnical engineering to collect soil samples and measure the resistance of the soil during drilling. It consists of a split-barrel sampler that is driven into the ground using a hammering action.

The SPT sampler typically consists of the following components:

1. Split Barrel: The split barrel is a cylindrical tube with a cutting shoe at the bottom and a split spoon at the top. It is made of high-strength steel to withstand the drilling forces.

2. Drive Head: The drive head is attached to the top of the split barrel and provides a connection point for the hammering action. It also helps in guiding the sampler into the ground.

3. Drive Rod: The drive rod is a long steel rod that connects the drive head to the hammer. It transmits the impact force from the hammer to the split barrel.

4. Hammer: The hammer is used to strike the drive rod, which in turn drives the split barrel into the ground. It can be either manually operated or powered by a hydraulic or pneumatic system.

During the SPT test, the sampler is driven into the ground at a specified rate (usually 1 inch per blow) and the number of blows required to penetrate each 6-inch increment is recorded. This is known as the "blow count" or "N-value" and is used to estimate the soil's resistance and strength.

After the sampling is completed, the split barrel is carefully extracted from the ground, keeping the soil sample intact. The soil sample can then be analyzed in the laboratory for various geotechnical properties such as grain size, moisture content, and shear strength.

The SPT sampler is widely used in geotechnical investigations, soil classification, and foundation design, as it provides valuable information about the soil's engineering properties and behavior.
